38 verified UK venuesCurated by Will Bales · Last reviewed 7 May 2026

According to Saddl's directory, there are 38 UK venues currently listed offering equine therapy or equine-assisted learning. The field includes hippotherapy (therapy delivered on horseback), equine-assisted psychotherapy, and equine-assisted learning programmes that work with children and adults on the ground rather than from the saddle.

Equine therapy and equine-assisted learning use the relationship between horse and human as a route into therapeutic work, education and personal development. The format ranges from clinical hippotherapy delivered by qualified occupational therapists, to ground-based learning sessions for school-refusal, autism support, trauma recovery and team development. Most UK centres do not require any prior horse experience; many do not involve riding at all. Practitioner standards vary - look for centres affiliated with Eagala, the LEAP Practitioner Network, or the British Horse Society's Changing Lives Through Horses programme.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between equine therapy and equine-assisted learning?
Equine therapy is delivered by qualified clinical practitioners (occupational therapists, psychotherapists) and is structured as a treatment programme. Equine-assisted learning (EAL) is broader - it covers educational, personal-development and team-building work, and is delivered by trained equine-learning facilitators rather than clinicians. Both work with horses but the goals and standards differ.
Do I need to be able to ride to take part?
Usually not. Most UK programmes are ground-based, working with horses through grooming, leading, observation and structured activities at liberty. Some hippotherapy programmes do involve being on horseback, but these are clinical sessions led by a trained practitioner with side-walkers.
Is equine therapy effective?
Evidence is strongest for hippotherapy in the treatment of physical conditions (cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, post-stroke rehabilitation), where the horse's movement is used therapeutically. The evidence base for equine-assisted psychotherapy is growing but is more variable; effectiveness depends substantially on the practitioner's clinical training rather than the horse alone.
