About this yard
Birtles Equestrian is a family-run, ABRS approved riding school in Cranage, near Holmes Chapel in Cheshire, founded over 65 years ago by Adeline Darbyshire and now run by her daughter Sally. It offers private, group and semi-private lessons for children aged 7 and up and adults, plus a horse loan scheme and seasonal pony days.
The centre also provides Equine Assisted Therapy alongside its riding lessons, drawing on healing expertise brought into the business by Sally. Facilities include an indoor arena, an outdoor all-weather arena, a grass arena usable as a jumping paddock, and a cross-country course.

What to wear

Sturdy boots with a small heel. Trainers and flat, smooth-soled shoes are not suitable for safety reasons. Check with the yard for their exact requirements.
Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs should be covered, and waterproofs are worth having for outdoor lessons. Check with the yard if you are unsure.
Long hair should be tied back before putting on your hat, and jewellery removed before riding.
