Equestrian Venues in Hampshire
Hampshire is defined by two landscapes, and both are exceptional for riding. The New Forest in the south is one of the great riding areas of England, open access country grazed by its famous ponies, where you can ride for hours across heath and through ancient woodland. To the north and east, the South Downs and chalk country give firm, fast going. Saddl lists 20 venues, 10 BHS-approved, an even split that mixes teaching schools with hacking and trekking centres. The Forest yards lean towards leisure and trail riding, ideal for visitors and families, while the downland yards run more conventional lessons, schooling and competition. Hacking is the county's great strength, with some of the most varied and accessible off-road riding in southern England. Endurance has a following here, helped by the terrain. Prices are reasonable for the south, particularly away from the wealthier downland villages. For a first lesson or a family pony day, the choice of accredited schools is good. For experienced riders, the combination of forest and downs within one county is hard to better.
