About this yard
Willowbrook Riding Centre is a family-owned, ABRS+ approved horse riding school and livery yard in the semi-rural village of Hambrook, near the West Sussex/Hampshire border, about four miles from Havant and Chichester. Established in 1989 by Christine Hirlehey, it has a relaxed, informal atmosphere and is licensed by West Sussex County Council.
Group and private lessons run for all abilities from age two and a half upwards, with a maximum rider weight of 16 stone and a cap of 6 riders per lesson or hack. Hacking runs on local routes and onto the Sussex Downs, with some routes reaching Kingley Vale nature reserve; hacks are always escorted and hard hats are provided. Children's pony mornings are also offered, and the centre can cater for people with mild disabilities, though it has no specialist equipment. Horses are never worked more than 4 hours a day and get at least two full days off a week.
Open five days a week (closed Mondays and Tuesdays). B&B accommodation is available on site, and the centre also sells confidence-giving horses and ponies.

What to wear

A hat to a current recognised safety standard. Requirements can vary, so check with the yard before you ride.
Sturdy boots with a small heel. Trainers and flat, smooth-soled shoes are not suitable for safety reasons. Check with the yard for their exact requirements.
Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs should be covered, and waterproofs are worth having for outdoor lessons. Check with the yard if you are unsure.
Long hair should be tied back before putting on your hat, and jewellery removed before riding.
