About this yard
Tillington Stables is a small, family-run children's riding school on Coxlands Lane in the village of Tillington, within the South Downs National Park near Petworth. Established in 1980, it is licensed by Chichester District Council with a 5-star rating and is an ABRS+ Approved Riding Establishment.
The ethos is welcoming, kind and inclusive, using positive reinforcement and achievable goals, with each child developing at their own pace. Riders are welcomed from age 5 upwards.
Term-time group lessons run on Saturday and Sunday mornings in 30-minute and one-hour sessions. School-holiday pony mornings (Easter, half terms, summer and Halloween) are themed activity sessions combining ground skills, riding, grooming and theory, running 9:30am to 12:00pm. Summer lessons take place in roped field arenas for flatwork, showjumping and dressage; winter focuses on instructional hacks so riding continues year round.

What to wear

A hat to a current recognised safety standard. Requirements can vary, so check with the yard before you ride.
Sturdy boots with a small heel. Trainers and flat, smooth-soled shoes are not suitable for safety reasons. Check with the yard for their exact requirements.
Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs should be covered, and waterproofs are worth having for outdoor lessons. Check with the yard if you are unsure.
Long hair should be tied back before putting on your hat, and jewellery removed before riding.
