About this yard

Lacy's Cottage Riding School is a friendly, family-run yard at Scrayingham, nestled in the base of the Wolds on the edge of the Vale of York — 3 miles from Stamford Bridge, 9 miles from Malton and a 15-minute drive from York. Run by Nicky and Chris Pimlott, the school has been established for more than 25 years.

Chris rode as a professional jump jockey before turning to teaching, apprenticed to Tommy Shedden and Gordon W Richards, with 45 winners in his best season and a single Grand National ride in 1983, aboard Arrigle Boy. That firsthand experience at the top of the sport runs through the teaching here.

Lacy's Cottage is approved to British Horse Society standards (BHS Centre No. 10000270, Licence No. 18/00488) and is also a registered Pony Club Centre. Private, semi-private (up to 4) and group lessons are available from age 4 upwards, covering flatwork, jumping or a mix, on a school pony or your own. Hats and boots are provided. Fun days run in the school holidays, with an annual summer camp culminating in a gymkhana, show jumping and dressage competitions with rosettes for all. Children's birthday parties are also available.

What age can children start riding lessons?

Lessons are provided from the ages of 4 upwards.

Do I need to provide my own horse or pony?

You can use a riding school pony, or you can bring your own to have lessons on.

What types of lessons are available?

Private (1-1), semi-private (up to 4) and class lessons are offered. Lessons can cover handling and looking after your pony, flatwork, jumping or a mixture.

Are hats and boots provided?

Yes, hats and boots are provided.

What is the current lesson offer?

Buy ten lessons up front and get an additional lesson completely free. Must be used within 6 months, non-transferable, no refunds.

What happens if there is bad weather?

In the event of bad weather, a message will be left on the answering machine to confirm if lessons will take place. You can also check the Facebook page.

What to wear

Standard guidance for equestrian yards in the UK. Check with your yard if you're unsure.

Riding helmet

A correctly fitted hat to current safety standards (PAS 015 or VG1). Bicycle helmets are not permitted. Hats are available to hire, usually reserved for first-time riders.

Footwear

Boots with a small heel, riding boots, walking boots or wellies all work. Trainers and flat-soled shoes are not permitted for safety reasons.

Clothing

Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs must be covered, no vest tops or shorts. Jackets and coats should be fastened securely. Waterproofs are recommended for outdoor lessons.

Hair & jewellery

Long hair should be tied back in a ponytail before putting on your helmet. All jewellery must be removed before riding.
