About this yard

Kilnsey Trekking and Riding Centre sits in the Wharfedale valley in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, near Skipton, Malham and Bolton Abbey. It holds BHS approval as a riding school and is a Pony Club Approved Centre.

The centre caters for all ages from 4 upward, welcoming able-bodied and disabled riders, complete beginners, intermediate and experienced riders. The offer covers pony trekking through the Dales landscape, structured riding lessons, and horse riding holidays, including multi-day residential stays for those wanting a more immersive equestrian experience. Trekking routes take riders through some of the most distinctive limestone scenery in northern England.

Pony Club events and competitions run throughout the year. The centre is a long-established yard and well-regarded locally for the quality and temperament of its horse and pony string. The River Trek and Cool Scar Trek are suitable for beginners; longer rides, the Outgang Trek, Limestone Pavement Trek and Mastiles Lane Ride, are for ages 11 and up only and not suitable for nervous or inexperienced riders. Children aged 6 and under must be led by a parent or suitable adult.

What is the minimum age for riding?

Children must be over 3 years old to ride. Children aged 3 to under 6 must be led on the pony by a parent or suitable adult.

Are there weight limits?

Yes. The limit for walking River Rides is 14 stone (88 kg). The limit for hill rides is 13.3 stone (84 kg). Riders should provide an accurate, fully dressed weight at booking.

Do you provide riding hats?

Yes, BSI standard riding hats can be provided by the centre.

What is a trek versus a ride?

Treks are for people with little or no riding experience, travel at walk pace, and are led at the pace of the least experienced rider. Rides suit intermediate and advanced riders, usually consist of smaller groups, and include cantering.

Can I book a bespoke riding holiday?

Yes. The centre welcomes enquiries about tailored packages. Contact them on 01756 752861 between 8am, 9:30am or 4pm, 6pm to discuss your requirements.

What is the cancellation policy?

Deposits are refundable less a booking fee if you cancel at least two weeks before your booked date. The centre requests payment in full or a deposit when you make your booking.
