A note on what this is, and is not. Horseback riding through the vines is a real thing in California and Tuscany. It is not currently a thing in England. We checked every major vineyard in two of England's strongest wine regions and found walking tours, cycling routes, even a resident hawk, but no horse riding at any of them. What does exist, genuinely, is real riding lessons a short drive from real vineyards: two good things worth doing on the same day, not one invented experience.
Near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk
Suffolk's wine country sits right around this market town. Wyken Vineyards, planted in 1988, lets visitors walk freely from the Leaping Hare restaurant across Hare Meadow to the vines themselves. Giffords Hall in nearby Hartest runs guided tours Thursday to Saturday, March to October. Hawkswood Vineyard adds a genuinely unusual extra: a resident hawk that flies for visitors during tours.
For the riding side, three real, BHS-approved yards sit within easy reach.
Barrow Hall Stables, just outside Bury St Edmunds, offers group and private lessons from age four, hacking, and a cross-country course, alongside an RDA group it hosts locally.
Hill Farm Riding School, Elmswell, is a Pony Club centre running structured lessons for all abilities, with occasional "Ponies and Prosecco" evenings, a nice, if unrelated, echo of the wine theme nearby.
Moat Farm Riding Centre, Lawshall, is a small, family-run school specialising in building confidence for nervous riders, capped at three riders per lesson for proper individual attention.
Near Docking, Norfolk
North Norfolk's vineyards cluster around Burnham Market. Burn Valley Vineyard in North Creake is a genuine family project, run by the Robinson family, third-generation Norfolk farmers, with guided tastings on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Cobble Hill Vineyard, on the outskirts of Burnham Market itself, has been run by the Perowne family across five generations of farming the same land, and offers tours Thursday to Saturday through October.
For the riding side:
Mount Pleasant Equestrian Centre, Heacham, is a family-run, BHS-approved Pony Club centre offering lessons for all ages, pony camp days and "Own a Pony" mornings.
The Chestnut Stables, Pott Row near King's Lynn, is a long-established, 5-star rated riding school, running since the late 1980s, with a structured progress-tracking system for lessons. Worth knowing: they require registration in advance and do not take same-day bookings.
The honest bottom line
If a genuine vineyard trail ride ever opens in England, we will be first to update this. For now, this is the accurate version: ride in the morning, taste in the afternoon. Two real, separately bookable things, not one that does not exist yet.
