About this yard
Taunton Vale Polo Club was founded in 1911 by Officers of the Somerset Light Infantry Regimental Depot and claims the oldest polo ground in England. Two boarded grounds (1 and 2) sit at Orchard Portman, three miles from Taunton, alongside a practice ground. The club runs Wednesday chukkas and weekend tournaments, with ponies available to hire and Have-a-Go days for newcomers. Members must hold appropriate HPA membership and insurance for their handicap. Polo for all levels from beginner through to professional. Two boarded grounds plus a practice ground host Wednesday chukkas and weekend tournaments, April to September. Polo pony hire is available for lessons, chukkas and tournaments, and beginner lessons run on Sunday mornings, alongside "have a go" days with breakfast, a lesson, a practice chukka and lunch. Spectators are welcome free of charge (aside from some finals), with a licensed bar, parking and a thatched clubhouse.

Sturdy boots with a small heel. Trainers and flat, smooth-soled shoes are not suitable for safety reasons. Check with the yard for their exact requirements.
Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs should be covered, and waterproofs are worth having for outdoor lessons. Check with the yard if you are unsure.
Long hair should be tied back before putting on your hat, and jewellery removed before riding.
