About this yard

Mill House Equestrian Centre at Bradford Mills, Bradford-on-Tone near Taunton, was established in 1961 by Sue, Stan and Barry Venn. The yard sits on the south Somerset Tone valley and combines a livery and loan operation with on-site accommodation: a Lakeside Lodge (sleeps 4) with its own pebble beach on the River Tone, and a riverside shepherd's hut. Lessons and pony loans are available alongside the livery offer. Weddings and events are run from a separate part of the site. Teaching is arena-based rather than trekking or hacking out — lessons focus on flatwork, jumping and dressage fundamentals under founder Barry Venn's direct, hands-on style, which several long-standing riders credit with teaching them properly from the ground up.

What to wear

Standard guidance for equestrian yards in the UK. Check with your yard if you're unsure.

Riding helmet

A correctly fitted hat to current safety standards (PAS 015 or VG1). Bicycle helmets are not permitted. Hats are available to hire, usually reserved for first-time riders.

Footwear

Boots with a small heel, riding boots, walking boots or wellies all work. Trainers and flat-soled shoes are not permitted for safety reasons.

Clothing

Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs must be covered, no vest tops or shorts. Jackets and coats should be fastened securely. Waterproofs are recommended for outdoor lessons.

Hair & jewellery

Long hair should be tied back in a ponytail before putting on your helmet. All jewellery must be removed before riding.
