About this yard

Flying Start Riding Centre has specialised in teaching children from age 3 upwards for over 25 years near Taunton, Somerset. Owner Vicky first rode at Flying Start as a child, later worked in the horse racing industry with Martin Pipe's yard, and took over the centre in 2014. Structured group lessons progress riders through gradings, alongside private tuition and sessions for riders with additional needs.

Facilities include a 20m x 30m indoor arena, an outdoor arena, a grass gallop, a mini cross-country course, and surrounding countryside for hacking. An Equestrian Business Awards finalist for Riding School of the Year in 2022.

What to wear

Sturdy boots with a small heel. Trainers and flat, smooth-soled shoes are not suitable for safety reasons. Check with the yard for their exact requirements.

Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs should be covered, and waterproofs are worth having for outdoor lessons. Check with the yard if you are unsure.

Hair & jewellery

Long hair should be tied back before putting on your hat, and jewellery removed before riding.
