About this yard

Nelson Park Riding Centre in Birchington is the only riding school in the Thanet area with a modern indoor arena, plus floodlit outdoor arenas, a dedicated showjump field and over 15 acres of cross country course. BHS Highly Commended, BHS Training Centre and Examination Centre, BHS Riding & Road Safety Approved. Thanet's only official RDA approved riding centre and the largest local Pony Club Centre, with over 350 riders per week. Full instructor team trained in first aid with onsite defibrillator. NVQ, National Diploma and BHS Stages 1 to 4 training courses. Large cafe open at weekends (Food Hygiene 5-star), viewing gallery to indoor school, equine solarium and shower.

What to wear

Riding helmet

A correctly fitted hat to current safety standards (PAS 015 or VG1). Bicycle helmets are not permitted. Hats are available to hire, usually reserved for first-time riders.

Footwear

Boots with a small heel, riding boots, walking boots or wellies all work. Trainers and flat-soled shoes are not permitted for safety reasons.

Clothing

Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs must be covered, no vest tops or shorts. Jackets and coats should be fastened securely. Waterproofs are recommended for outdoor lessons.

Hair & jewellery

Long hair should be tied back in a ponytail before putting on your helmet. All jewellery must be removed before riding.
