About this yard
Mudchute Park & Farm is a 32-acre urban farm on the Isle of Dogs that incorporates a BHS-approved riding school. The yard runs around 25 horses and ponies suitable for adults and children, with show jumps, cross-country fences and an outdoor arena. Lessons run for adults and children from age 7, with school holiday camps that cover stable management alongside riding (boots included; hat hire £1.50). The setting is unique in London: the riding takes place against the backdrop of the Canary Wharf skyline, alongside more than 100 other animals on the farm including donkeys and llamas. The farm itself is free to visit and one of the largest city farms in Europe. The wider farm was founded in 1977 when the Mudchute Association successfully campaigned to preserve the land from development. The equestrian centre is open Monday-Thursday 8am-9pm, Friday 8am-4.30pm, and weekends 8am-5.30pm.

What to wear
Standard guidance for equestrian yards in the UK. Check with your yard if you're unsure.
A correctly fitted hat to current safety standards (PAS 015 or VG1). Bicycle helmets are not permitted. Hats are available to hire, usually reserved for first-time riders.

Boots with a small heel, riding boots, walking boots or wellies all work. Trainers and flat-soled shoes are not permitted for safety reasons.
Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs must be covered, no vest tops or shorts. Jackets and coats should be fastened securely. Waterproofs are recommended for outdoor lessons.
Long hair should be tied back in a ponytail before putting on your helmet. All jewellery must be removed before riding.
Clients arriving in unsuitable clothing or footwear may not be permitted to ride, for their own safety. If in doubt, contact the yard before your visit.
