Ride the Lipizzaner where the breed itself began in 1580
A riding experience at Lipica Stud Farm, the literal birthplace of the Lipizzaner horse, founded in 1580 and recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Includes riding, carriage rides and lessons with the stud's own trainers, alongside its famous Classical Riding School shows.
There is something here at every level. Complete beginners start with lunge lessons and short private lessons; more experienced riders work on classical dressage or ride out. The trail rides on the estate and across the Karst are for riders with some experience, roughly a competent and independent rider.

This is a centre-based riding break rather than a trail holiday. Days are built around lessons in the covered and outdoor arenas, with the option to watch the riding school train, take a guided ride out across the estate and the Karst, or take a carriage drive. Lessons run from beginner lunge work to classical dressage, arranged to suit your experience, with plenty of time to explore the historic stud, its stables and museum between rides.
On-site at the estate's hotels, including the four-star Hotel Maestoso, with a pool, sauna and fitness centre. Rooms are booked separately from the riding.
Meals are not included in the riding; the on-site hotels and restaurants cater for all meals.
Best months: April to October
The stud runs year-round, with spring to autumn the most pleasant for riding out and watching the school. Performances and training follow a published schedule.
Nearest airport: Trieste (TRS) in Italy is closest, about 20 minutes; Ljubljana (LJU) is around 1.5 hours and Venice (VCE) about 2 hours
Transfers: A short drive or taxi from Trieste; buses run from Trieste and Ljubljana
Fly to Trieste, Ljubljana or Venice, then a short transfer to Lipica near the Italian border.
