Somerby Equestrian Centre is a BHS/ABRS approved riding school established by Gail Stimson in 1991, set in the Leicestershire countryside near Melton Mowbray with miles of off-road hacking bridleways. The centre caters for all ages and abilities from complete beginners to competition riders, age 4 to "104". Both indoor and outdoor schools. BHS Pony Stars, Pony Club, Changing Lives Through Horses (from March 2024), residential summer camps, and a showjumping league.
Current prices: Child group 30min £22, Child group 45min £30, Child group 1hr £37; Adult group 1hr £43; Siblings 1hr x2 £70, x3 £105; Private 30min £45, Private 45min £55; Semi-private child 30min £34, Semi-private 45min £45; Group hack 1hr £43, 1.5hr £52, 2hr £62; Pony day £45-50. 24-hour cancellation policy, 100% charge if less notice given. Somerby is also home to The Mount Group RDA, a Riding for the Disabled group with over 50 volunteers providing weekly therapeutic riding sessions for children and adults with special needs, formed in 1986 to support pupils from the Mount Special Needs School.

What to wear
Standard guidance for equestrian yards in the UK. Check with your yard if you're unsure.
A correctly fitted hat to current safety standards (PAS 015 or VG1). Bicycle helmets are not permitted. Hats are available to hire, usually reserved for first-time riders.
Boots with a small heel, riding boots, walking boots or wellies all work. Trainers and flat-soled shoes are not permitted for safety reasons.
Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs must be covered, no vest tops or shorts. Jackets and coats should be fastened securely. Waterproofs are recommended for outdoor lessons.
Long hair should be tied back in a ponytail before putting on your helmet. All jewellery must be removed before riding.
Clients arriving in unsuitable clothing or footwear may not be permitted to ride, for their own safety. If in doubt, contact the yard before your visit.
