About this yard

The Holistic Horse & Pony Centre at Rydings Farm in Ockham, Surrey is a family-run yard with over 30 years' experience, specialising in helping new, nervous and novice riders feel calm and confident in and out of the saddle. It is a member of the Association of British Riding Schools.

The "Holistic Riding" approach was pioneered by Wendy Firmin-Price, who is the only riding instructor in the UK to hold a Teaching Diploma in Practical Metaphysics; her approach has been covered in national press and on Radio 4's "All in the Mind". Riders are encouraged to arrive early to groom and tack up their own horse (assistance provided) to build the bond before riding.

Alongside lessons, the centre offers equine assisted therapy, pony experiences covering hands-on stable management, own-a-pony days in school holidays and inset days, a children's weekend riding club, sharer options for retired and non-ridden ponies, and confidence and self-esteem sessions for children and adults with additional needs. Small-group equine therapy sessions for home-educating families include AQA unit awards. The site is home to Healing Hearts and Minds with Horses CIC, supporting stressed and struggling teenagers, and to The HEART Centre, which runs courses, workshops and equine assisted facilitator training.
