About this yard
Hertfordshire Polo Club at Woolmers Park near Letty Green runs an Introduction to Polo experience designed for absolute beginners. The two-hour session under Head Coach Martin State and his team covers the four basic strokes (using the wooden horse and polo boxes), riding for polo on a quiet schooling pony, the rules of the game, and a first stick-and-ball mini chukka. Coach, pony, hat and mallet are provided.
The club has thirty school ponies and runs lessons all year round including weekends. Suitable as a single experience day or as the start of a competitive route through Instructional Chukkas to club polo. Gift vouchers available. Woolmers Park is a Grade II* listed country house, once home to the Earl and Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne (parents of the late Queen Mother) in the 1920s; the estate was acquired by Arthur Lucas in 1949, when the polo club was established in its grounds. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, spectators are welcome to bring canvas chairs and a blanket, and are invited to help "tread in the divots" at half time.

What to wear

A hat to a current recognised safety standard. Requirements can vary, so check with the yard before you ride.
Sturdy boots with a small heel. Trainers and flat, smooth-soled shoes are not suitable for safety reasons. Check with the yard for their exact requirements.
Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs should be covered, and waterproofs are worth having for outdoor lessons. Check with the yard if you are unsure.
Long hair should be tied back before putting on your hat, and jewellery removed before riding.
