About this yard

Follifoot Park Riding Centre has been running since 1986 from its base in the village of Follifoot on the southern outskirts of Harrogate. It holds ABRS+ approval and works through the ABRS riding and stable management tests A–E, giving children a structured progression framework alongside their riding.

The youngest riders can start at age 3 on Tiny Tots sessions, 20-minute introductions to horses in the arena. From age 4, children progress onto half-hour classes, with lessons building towards canter, jumping and gymkhana games as confidence develops. Adults of all levels are welcome from novice through to dressage and showjumping, with no upper age limit. Group lessons, semi-private and private sessions are all available, along with hacks into the Harrogate countryside.

Weight limit for ridden sessions is 13.5 stone. Riders up to 16 stone can book a session on Storm, the centre's mechanical horse simulator. Facilities include an indoor arena with sand and rubber surface and a viewing gallery, and an outdoor floodlit arena with sand and rubber chipping surface. The centre also runs specialist dressage and showjumping clinics, Pony Days for children aged 7 and above (£40 for a full 10:15am–3pm day), birthday parties, summer holiday camps and the Follifoot Park Young Riders Club, a ClubMark accredited group for under-16s.

Lessons are booked via the online platform; riders create an account and only see sessions matched to their ability level. Open seven days: Monday to Friday 9am–6:30pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am–4pm.

What to wear

Standard guidance for equestrian yards in the UK. Check with your yard if you're unsure.

Riding helmet

A correctly fitted hat to current safety standards (PAS 015 or VG1). Bicycle helmets are not permitted. Hats are available to hire, usually reserved for first-time riders.

Footwear

Boots with a small heel, riding boots, walking boots or wellies all work. Trainers and flat-soled shoes are not permitted for safety reasons.

Clothing

Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs must be covered, no vest tops or shorts. Jackets and coats should be fastened securely. Waterproofs are recommended for outdoor lessons.

Hair & jewellery

Long hair should be tied back in a ponytail before putting on your helmet. All jewellery must be removed before riding.

Clients arriving in unsuitable clothing or footwear may not be permitted to ride, for their own safety. If in doubt, contact the yard before your visit.
