Trail riding the Ribatejo on trained Lusitano horses, from Santarem to the coast
A trail-riding holiday in Portugal's Ribatejo with Lusitano Trail Rides, based near Santarem, on well-trained Lusitano horses known for their friendly character, soft paces and willingness to work. Small groups of no more than six ride out through cork-oak country, farmland and along old trails, on fit horses happy to trot and canter. Longer rides can reach the Atlantic Silver Coast.
You should be balanced and in control at all paces, comfortable riding out for several hours a day. The Lusitanos are responsive and forward-going but kind, so this suits improving intermediate riders as well as the experienced.

Days ride out from the base near Santarem through cork-oak country and farmland, with long trots and canters on the open plains, and picnic or taverna lunches. Longer itineraries work their way west towards the Atlantic coast.
