About this yard
Uist Community Riding School is a registered charity and not-for-profit riding school and livery yard at East Camp, Balivanich on the Isle of Benbecula, the home of horse and pony riding across Uist, Benbecula and Barra. Instruction is from a BHS qualified instructor, with horses and ponies of all shapes and sizes and a 14-stone rider weight limit.
The main draw in spring and summer is beach riding: the yard is five minutes from an endless white-sand beach and all beach rides are staffed, generally with assistants on foot to help riders settle in and get to know their pony. Lessons, hacks, pony rides, fun sessions, clubs and holiday activities (Easter egg hunts, own-a-pony sessions) run through the year, catering for beginners through to advanced and riders with additional needs. Hacking routes are quiet and safe with minimal traffic. Riding hats are supplied free of charge.
Facilities include 9 indoor stables, a floodlit indoor arena, an outdoor paddock with white boards for jumping and schooling, and extensive turnout. Livery options cover full, assisted DIY, DIY, working, grass and holiday, with all-year turnout. Parking, toilets and snacks on site; the centre is not wheelchair or pushchair friendly.
Regular riders are asked to become members, which supports the charity's sustainability and allows involvement in the committee (16+) and volunteering.

What to wear
Standard guidance for equestrian yards in the UK. Check with your yard if you're unsure.
A hat to a current recognised safety standard. Requirements can vary, so check with the yard before you ride.
Sturdy boots with a small heel. Trainers and flat, smooth-soled shoes are not suitable for safety reasons. Check with the yard for their exact requirements.
Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs should be covered, and waterproofs are worth having for outdoor lessons. Check with the yard if you are unsure.
Long hair should be tied back before putting on your hat, and jewellery removed before riding.
