About this yard
Rookin House sits at Troutbeck (the northern Lakes one, between Keswick and Penrith) and runs both an equestrian centre and a wider outdoor activity centre. Established over 25 years, it is an ABRS member and a Pony Club riding school branch, with a herd of over 45 horses and ponies ranging from Welsh Section A to Clydesdales. Rides run from 30-minute lead rein sessions for tiny tots and complete beginners through 1, 1.5 and 2-hour treks up to full-day rides, with both private and group options. Riding lessons cover a range of disciplines including showjumping and cross-country, alongside own-a-pony days, Pony Club test training and birthday pony parties.
Facilities include a 46m x 30m indoor school with a waxed surface — used for competitions and demonstrations through the year — and a 40m x 20m outdoor arena. Maximum rider weight 100kg (15.5 stone), though this varies daily depending on which horses are working. Beyond riding, the centre offers quad biking, archery, clay pigeon shooting, assault courses and fishing, with on-site accommodation available.

What to wear
Standard guidance for equestrian yards in the UK. Check with your yard if you're unsure.
A correctly fitted hat to current safety standards (PAS 015 or VG1). Bicycle helmets are not permitted. Hats are available to hire, usually reserved for first-time riders.

Boots with a small heel, riding boots, walking boots or wellies all work. Trainers and flat-soled shoes are not permitted for safety reasons.
Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs must be covered, no vest tops or shorts. Jackets and coats should be fastened securely. Waterproofs are recommended for outdoor lessons.
Long hair should be tied back in a ponytail before putting on your helmet. All jewellery must be removed before riding.
Clients arriving in unsuitable clothing or footwear may not be permitted to ride, for their own safety. If in doubt, contact the yard before your visit.
