About this yard

Penshaw Equestrian Centre is one of the region's best-equipped BHS-approved riding schools, established in 1977 near Washington and Penshaw in Sunderland. Strong for flatwork, dressage, and showjumping with regular clinics, BHS exam pathways, and progression from beginners through to competition level. Two indoor arenas and a very large outdoor school. Established in 1978. The Changing Lives Through Horses (CLtH) programme offers group and one-to-one sessions for young people aged 5-25 with special needs, developing confidence, teamwork and life skills through professional coaching. Pony Weeks run during school holidays.

What to wear

Riding helmet

A hat to a current recognised safety standard. Requirements can vary, so check with the yard before you ride.

Footwear

Sturdy boots with a small heel. Trainers and flat, smooth-soled shoes are not suitable for safety reasons. Check with the yard for their exact requirements.

Clothing

Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs should be covered, and waterproofs are worth having for outdoor lessons. Check with the yard if you are unsure.

Hair & jewellery

Long hair should be tied back before putting on your hat, and jewellery removed before riding.
