About this yard

Gleneagles Equestrian School is a high-end riding school and training centre at The Gleneagles Hotel in Auchterarder, Perthshire. First-class riding lessons for all ages and abilities from 4 years, from total beginner to advanced rider. The 26 school horses range from Shetland ponies to ex CCI** eventers, 1.20m show jumpers and elementary dressage horses. Specialises in dressage, show jumping, cross-country, and general skills development. BHS exam preparation courses, Intensive Training courses and evening classes. Polo lessons, trail riding, lead rein and carriage driving also available. Regular unaffiliated dressage and show jumping competitions on-site, plus autumn hunter trials. You don't need to be a hotel guest to ride — Gleneagles Station (London-Inverness line) is 2 minutes from the hotel.

What to wear

Standard guidance for equestrian yards in the UK. Check with your yard if you're unsure.

Riding helmet

A correctly fitted hat to current safety standards (PAS 015 or VG1). Bicycle helmets are not permitted. Hats are available to hire, usually reserved for first-time riders.

Footwear

Boots with a small heel, riding boots, walking boots or wellies all work. Trainers and flat-soled shoes are not permitted for safety reasons.

Clothing

Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs must be covered, no vest tops or shorts. Jackets and coats should be fastened securely. Waterproofs are recommended for outdoor lessons.

Hair & jewellery

Long hair should be tied back in a ponytail before putting on your helmet. All jewellery must be removed before riding.
