About this yard
Cholwell Riding Stables has been running for nearly 40 years on the western edge of Dartmoor at Mary Tavy, near Tavistock. The yard is family-run and offers escorted rides on the open moor alongside lessons in the school, with horses matched to rider ability. Bookings are taken by phone; the email address is for non-urgent enquiries only. The setting gives riders direct access to one of the most varied moorland landscapes in the south of England.

A hat to a current recognised safety standard. Requirements can vary, so check with the yard before you ride.
Sturdy boots with a small heel. Trainers and flat, smooth-soled shoes are not suitable for safety reasons. Check with the yard for their exact requirements.
Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs should be covered, and waterproofs are worth having for outdoor lessons. Check with the yard if you are unsure.
Long hair should be tied back before putting on your hat, and jewellery removed before riding.
