# Horse Riding in London: Where to Ride in the Capital
Most people's idea of horse riding in London begins and ends with Hyde Park. That's understandable — Rotten Row is one of the most famous riding tracks in the world, William III had it built in 1690 to light the route between Kensington Palace and St James's, and it still has horses on it most mornings. But it's only a fraction of what's available, and some of what exists elsewhere in the city is genuinely extraordinary.
London has 39 equestrian venues. Several of them offer riding experiences that you won't find anywhere else in the world.
---
Hyde Park and Rotten Row
Two stables operate in and around Hyde Park: Hyde Park Stables on Bathurst Mews, and Ross Nye Stables, the longest-established riding school in central London, hacking in Hyde Park since 1965. Both take riders of all abilities and provide everything you need.
A session on Rotten Row typically runs for an hour. You ride along the sand track beside the Serpentine, with the park opening up to the south and Kensington Gardens to the west. The Household Cavalry rides through from Knightsbridge each morning on the way to the daily Changing of the Guard — if your timing aligns, you'll pass them.
Prices start from around £115 per hour at Hyde Park Stables. Book well ahead — these slots fill quickly, particularly on weekend mornings.

Mudchute, Isle of Dogs
This is the one that surprises people most.
Mudchute Park & Farm covers 32 acres on the Isle of Dogs, and its BHS-approved riding school operates with Canary Wharf directly behind it. You ride in an outdoor arena or hack around the farm's perimeter with the towers of the financial district filling the skyline. It's completely incongruous and completely real — one of the genuinely singular riding experiences available anywhere.
The farm is accessible on the DLR from central London. Lessons run for all abilities from beginners upwards. It's one of the more affordable London options, and the kind of place that makes you realise how much of the city most visitors never see.

Vauxhall City Farm
Vauxhall City Farm sits in Lambeth, ten minutes on foot from Vauxhall station and roughly the same from Westminster Bridge. It runs a small riding school and RDA programme from a working city farm in what might be the most central equestrian location in England.
It doesn't operate with the same depth of programme as the larger London yards, but for anyone who wants to sit on a horse within walking distance of Westminster, nothing else comes close. Check availability directly as session slots are limited.

Richmond Park
Several yards operate on the edges of Richmond Park, which at 2,500 acres is one of the largest urban parks in Europe and home to around 650 red and fallow deer.
Stag Lodge Stables borders Richmond Park directly, running 70-plus horses across seven arenas with lessons from age three and riding for all abilities. You can hack along the park boundary on permitted bridleways — the deer are a reliable sight on morning rides.
Wimbledon Village Stables sits on the opposite side of the park on the edge of Wimbledon Common. It's five-star BHS and ABRS awarded, with hacking across the Common itself — open parkland, mixed woodland, and enough space to feel far from the city even though you're not. For anyone visiting London who knows Wimbledon from tennis, the Common is a revelation.
Petersham Farm Stables in Richmond offers hacking through Richmond Park itself — worth checking their specific access arrangements when you enquire.

Ham Polo Club
London's last surviving polo club has been operating between Richmond Park and the Thames since 1926. Ham sits in a stretch of riverside meadow that hasn't changed much in character over that time, and the club runs introduction sessions and beginner lessons alongside its main season from April to September.
Ham Polo Club is accessible from Richmond or Kingston — one of the more unusual visitor experiences in London, and almost entirely unknown outside the people who use it.

East and South East London
Lee Valley Riding Centre covers 25 acres in the Lea Valley Regional Park near Walthamstow — BHS-approved, with a cross-country course, indoor arena, and lessons for all ages and abilities. The Lea Valley setting gives it a genuine countryside feel despite being well inside the M25.
Docklands Equestrian Centre in the Royal Docks is BHS and ABRS-approved, charity-run, and fully inclusive — one of the few riding centres in the world situated inside what was once the world's busiest port. Lessons for disabled and able-bodied riders from age three.
Dulwich Riding School is one of London's most established, founded in 1961, with hacking through Dulwich Woods. It carries a seven-month waiting list for regular lessons — a reliable indicator of quality.

North and West London
Trent Park Equestrian Centre in Cockfosters is a BHS Centre of Excellence set inside Trent Country Park — 400 acres of protected parkland in zone 4, with international-sized arenas and a cross-country course.
Ealing Riding School near Gunnersbury Park welcomes over 50,000 riders a year across four structured levels. BHS and ABRS-approved, accessible on the Overground.
The London Equestrian Centre in Mill Hill covers 34 acres, family-run and BHS-approved, with lessons from age three via the Northern line to Mill Hill East.

What to expect as a visitor
Prices are higher than the rest of England. A group lesson in London averages around £53 per hour — roughly double what you'd pay in the north of England. Hyde Park experiences command a further premium.
Booking ahead is essential. The best London yards are consistently full. For Hyde Park specifically, try to book at least two to three weeks ahead.
Most yards provide everything you need. Hat hire, basic equipment and instruction are standard. Wear long trousers rather than jeans, and shoes or boots with a small heel.
BHS approval matters more in London. The density of venues means quality varies more than in most parts of the country. Prioritise BHS or ABRS-approved yards if booking somewhere unfamiliar.
