Ranch Kuulas is a small, family-run ranch in the forest outside Rovaniemi, in Finnish Lapland and well inside the Arctic Circle. The family live and work here throughout the year with their Finnhorses, Finland's native breed, and take only a handful of guests at a time. It is a working farm rather than a resort, and a stay is built around the horses and the rhythm of the northern seasons rather than a packed itinerary.
The riding
The horses are the reason it works. The Finnhorse is compact, strong and famously level-headed, bred for exactly this kind of country. Horses are matched to riders rather than the other way round, groups stay small, and the guiding is unhurried and in English.
From June to early August the riding happens in the long light of the midnight sun, on forest trails and open hills. The week-long summer adventure adds a two-day wilderness trek with a night camped in the forest, and asks for a confident, experienced rider. In winter the forests fill with deep snow and the programme shifts to snow-trail rides, a traditional horse-drawn sleigh, and, on a clear cold night, a ride out under the northern lights. Winter riding suits all levels, with groups split by ability.
Beyond the saddle
Meals come out of a wood-fired oven at the ranch's own restaurant, Loimu, made with local Lapland ingredients. Guests stay either in farmhouse rooms styled after historic farm life or in lakeside glamping for two beside the forest, and quiet lakeside sauna evenings are part of the experience. The whole place is kept small-scale, personal and close to nature.
Getting there
Rovaniemi Airport is about 50 km away, roughly a 40-minute drive, with regular connections from Helsinki and selected European cities. Rovaniemi is also reachable by overnight train from Helsinki. Ranch transfers can be arranged.
Who it suits
Winter breaks welcome beginners, families and nervous riders, with steady horses and short, well-guided rides. The summer wilderness week is for experienced riders comfortable at all paces across rough ground. The ranch practises what it calls ethical horsemanship, sets a rider weight limit of 95 kg for the horses' welfare, and takes riders from age 12 (under-18s travel with a parent).
