About this yard

Yorkshire Equestrian Centre is a premier competition and training venue at South Milford, between Leeds and Selby. The site hosts affiliated and unaffiliated dressage, showjumping, arena eventing and showing competitions throughout the year, with arena eventing using purpose-built XC fences. Additional facilities include an equine water treadmill (hydrotherapy) for rehabilitation and conditioning, and a range of livery options.

Arena hire is available for private schooling and training, with the indoor arena, Quarry Arena and cross-country field bookable online. Resident trainer Gemma offers coaching clinics on site. External clinics from visiting professionals are also hosted. The venue is primarily competition and event-focused, it does not operate a public riding school.

Frequently asked questions

How do I book arena hire?
All arena hire bookings are made online up to 90 days in advance. For same-day bookings, call 07748 115588 first to confirm availability. Sessions must be pre-booked and paid for in advance. Access is via the Silver Gate immediately on the left after the railway bridge on Laith Staid Lane.
What is the cancellation and rescheduling policy for arena hire?
All arena hires are non-refundable. You may reschedule with at least 72 hours' notice. Rescheduling is not permitted within 72 hours of your booked session. Sessions will only be cancelled by the venue in cases of extreme weather or frozen conditions.
How many horses can I bring per arena hire session?
Each session includes up to 3 horses. An extra £5 is charged per additional horse, up to a maximum of 5 horses per session for the Quarry arena and 4 for the covered all-weather arena.
What happens at my first water treadmill appointment?
Your horse will be assessed for posture, physique and movement. They will be given time to acclimatise to the barn and treadmill with positive encouragement. First-time horses typically complete 8-12 minutes of work in water at fetlock height. Appointments are 30-minute slots and horses must be clean with feet picked out and legs washed before arrival.
What conditions can the water treadmill help with?
The treadmill is used for rehabilitation from kissing spine surgery, fractured pelvis, tendon injuries, weight issues, laminitis and bruised feet. It also helps with fitness conditioning, improving core strength, top line development and stride length. The cold water helps reduce swelling and boost circulation in the legs.
What do I need to bring for livery?
Upon arrival you will need copies of your horse's passport and vaccination record, proof of livery ID, and insurance. Your horse must have had a Strangles ELISA blood test no more than two weeks before arrival with a result of less than 0.2. Hay, haylage and bedding are not included but available on a pay-as-you-go basis.

What to wear

Standard guidance for equestrian yards in the UK. Check with your yard if you're unsure.

Riding helmet

A correctly fitted hat to current safety standards (PAS 015 or VG1). Bicycle helmets are not permitted. Hats are available to hire, usually reserved for first-time riders.

Footwear

Boots with a small heel, riding boots, walking boots or wellies all work. Trainers and flat-soled shoes are not permitted for safety reasons.

Clothing

Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs must be covered, no vest tops or shorts. Jackets and coats should be fastened securely. Waterproofs are recommended for outdoor lessons.

Hair & jewellery

Long hair should be tied back in a ponytail before putting on your helmet. All jewellery must be removed before riding.

Clients arriving in unsuitable clothing or footwear may not be permitted to ride, for their own safety. If in doubt, contact the yard before your visit.
