Grange Trekking Centre sits on the southern edge of the Black Mountains near Abergavenny, running guided trail rides on prize-winning Welsh Cobs through some of the finest upland country in Wales. The centre caters to all abilities from complete beginners to experienced riders wanting serious days in the saddle. Accommodation options run from a shepherd's hut and glamping pods through to full B&B in the riverside guesthouse, which has a wood-burning fire and the kind of breakfast that justifies five hours on a horse. Week-long packages include five full days of trekking with packed lunches, covering the Skirrid, Sugar Loaf, the Blorenge and the Black Mountain ridges. Weekend packages offer two full days of riding with two nights' accommodation and meals. Individual rides by the hour, half-day or full day are available throughout the season.

What to wear

Riding helmet

A correctly fitted hat to current safety standards (PAS 015 or VG1). Bicycle helmets are not permitted. Hats are available to hire, usually reserved for first-time riders.

Footwear

Boots with a small heel, riding boots, walking boots or wellies all work. Trainers and flat-soled shoes are not permitted for safety reasons.

Clothing

Close-fitting, weather-appropriate clothes. Shoulders and legs must be covered, no vest tops or shorts. Jackets and coats should be fastened securely. Waterproofs are recommended for outdoor lessons.

Hair & jewellery

Long hair should be tied back in a ponytail before putting on your helmet. All jewellery must be removed before riding.
